ImpactLives-Brookings invites you to join in helping feed the hungry in Haiti!
Last year at the Corn Palace 1,100 volunteers packed 380,068 meals in less than ten hours. Nearly $100,000 was raised for the event. And now Brookings and the surrounding communities have the opportunity to pack meals for the hungry people in Haiti. This is more important now than ever in the aftermath of the Haiti tragedy.
Leading scientists from ADM, Cargill & General Mills worked together to come up with the formula for the food, which is a highly nutritious blend that will save people’s lives. That formula is packaged together during a food packing event.
Each bag holds 6 meals and each meal is only 25¢ for the raw ingredients & to ship the food.

The raw ingredients include:
- Textured Soybean, fortified with 9 vitamins and minerals (making it 52% protein)
- 6 Vegetables for taste
- Rice for filler
- Vegetarian chicken flavored powder
- 21 Vitamins and Minerals
A shipping container will hold 285,120 meals. Imagine being able to provide one meal a day for an entire year for a community of almost 800 starving people. What a great way to spend 25c! What a great way to spend a day!
With SDSU as a Land Grant University, and Brookings as the county seat, steeped in agriculture, we can join together and become a community that feeds the world. That makes a very real difference… that Impacts Lives.
So here is the BIG PROJECT for Brookings, SD: Saturday, 27 March 2010 at the Larson Ice Center, Blue Rink…
- We could gather together from every corner of our community.
- We could pack in one day at least 285,120 meals.
- We could enlist 1000 volunteers: 200 people per shift, 5 shifts, 2 hours each, from 8 am – 6 pm.
- We could pool our resources and come up with the $72,000 that it will cost for the ingredients and shipping.
- We could work elbow to elbow to pack 1320 boxes, each $54.00 /box containing 36 bags of 6 meals.
